All the news for Australia

Running a charity can be tough at times, yet rewarding at others.  One of the hardest things to do is to chase funding.  For every yes you get, you will get 99 no’s.  So when we found a problem with our 4×4 truck on the sand, in the fact that it just didn’t turn with the thin tyres, I set about trying to find a set of wide tyres for the truck.  There are not Read more

Courtesy of a sponsorship from the team at Ocean Addicts, we held a very important Paddle Against Plastic event yesterday out of the Ocean Addicts SUP hire center at Cotton Tree.  Rather than just your simple clean up, this time we had a message to spread, and that was the statistics of how much debris our team pulled out of Sunshine Coast Waterways in 2017. Ocean Addicts made available 40 of their fleet of SUP’s Read more

There are some days that you walk away from an event just shaking your head, and that happened at yesterdays Paddle Against Plastic at Bulimba Creek in Hemmant.  So close to Brisbane city and a major tributary into the Brisbane River, the state of this creek is simply DIABOLICAL.   In the two days leading up to the Paddle Against Plastic event, Mark & Maura Harvey headed out onto the creek in their ‘Canoemaran’ and collected Read more

It’s days like these that make this Crusade all the more rewarding. The Currimundi Lake Community Clean up was part of a sponsorship with Unitywater & Sunshine Coast Region Council.  It was an event designed to get all the local community groups together, along with the community, to clean up Currimundi Lake on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast.  In my wildest dreams, the event would turn out like it did. When I first contacted all the local Read more

It’s the little things that will make a huge difference.  Well that’s what I think of regularly and when it comes to Surf Sock, well I reckon they just might have the same motto. For years surfers all over the globe have been using plastic bags to help them get into their wetsuits.  With a plastic bag ban slowly being implemented across the globe, and the surfing industry becoming very conscious of the plastic issue Read more

Last month I had the opportunity to visit Pacific Paradise State School grade 4 students.  I really love visiting schools however there was one new member of our visiting team.  Corky was making is school debut.  And what a hit he proved. I arrived and two young ladies helped me carry Corky and our art materials from the car.  The two ladies were excited to keep the secret that was Corky, hiding under my jumper. Read more

Green Island is located off Manly in Brisbane’s Moreton Bay.  Unfortunately it has a reputation of having had more plastic visit it than people.  So Ocean Crusaders set about changing that statistic by inviting the public to the island on Sunday 17th for one big clean up. Proudly Sponsored by Hideaway Handmade, with support from Construction People and Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron, 72 people turned up on the day, which was an amazing result for Read more

Our second Paddle Against Plastic on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast was set up to finish cleaning Stumers Creek after a team of 18 paddlers had managed to pull 107kg of debris out back in June.  We had a focus of cleaning up the area closer to the mouth and with the obvious meeting point being at the Off the Leash Dog Beach at the end of Stumers Creek Road, that meant we had access to clean Read more

Lurking in the oceans are creatures far deadlier than sharks.  You encounter them every day, yet you don’t know they are silently killing you.  How will you react when you next see these killers?  Will you make a choice to step away?  Our choices today make a difference tomorrow. As we are at the top of the food chain, we are eating these deadly species and taking in their toxins.  Here is a guide to Read more

It is not often that we get to announce sponsors but today we can share with you a new sponsor for Ocean Crusaders.  LED Diving Lights Australia have joined us by supplying our dive torches.  I asked Annika as our dive instructor what torches she wanted and immediately she told me that the Darkbuster was the light she had to have.  I contacted Michael and he was so supportive and shortly after our new torches Read more
